WC: Compassionate Claims Management in Workers' Compensation: Addressing Mental Health and Building Trust in the Process

Workers’ compensation claims can take a significant emotional toll on injured workers, employers,
attorneys, and adjusters. This session explores the mental health impact of prolonged litigation,
financial uncertainty, and adversarial proceedings, and offers strategies to foster resilience and
integrate mental health awareness into claims handling. Participants will learn how to build trust
through transparent, empathetic communication, navigate difficult conversations, and recover after
delivering bad news. The goal: more compassionate, effective resolutions and stronger relationships
throughout the claims process.

Presenters:
Vera Hill, Director, Risk Mitigation Services - Baldwin group
Ken Kaup, Partner - Cohen Vaughan
Beth Koller, Attorney - Gilson Daub

AI: Artificial Intelligence in Claims: What You're Learning and What You're Risking

Artificial intelligence is reshaping claims handling, but with innovation comes real risk. This interactive
session draws on over a decade of frontline experience to explore how AI is enhancing efficiencies
for insureds and claimants—while also introducing litigation risks around privacy, intellectual property,
safety, and cyber exposure. Attendees will examine current and emerging cases, learn how to
navigate AI-related legal pitfalls, and leave with practical strategies for using AI responsibly in
everyday claims discussions.

Presenters:
Andy Redick, Senior Manager Risk Management - Union Pacific Railroad
Richard Sawin, Partner - White & Williams

GL: Third-Party Litigation Funding - Litigation’s Shadow Economy

Third-party litigation funding (TPLF) has grown into a $15 billion force reshaping the legal landscape.
Hedge funds and private investors now bankroll lawsuits, driving up settlement demands and
complicating negotiations. This session explores how TPLF influences litigation strategy, the ethical
and regulatory challenges it poses, and the push for transparency. We’ll examine emerging case law,
state-level legislation, and real-world examples—including corporate use and foreign involvement.
Attendees will gain practical insights to identify TPLF’s impact and adjust defense strategies in a
rapidly evolving environment.

Presenters:
Anna Dawson , Claims Legal Services Manager - Canal Insurance Company
Mahima Raghav, AVP of Claims Judicial and Legislative Affairs - Zurich North America
